Over the past few months, I’ve been hearing about Beautycounter from friends and seeing the brand on social media. I love makeup and skincare, and I had been curious about their products. I was excited when my friend, who is a consultant, reached out to see if I wanted to give it a try!
What is Beautycounter?
Beautycounter was founded in 2013 by Gregg Renfrew as a safer alternative to everyday skincare and cosmetics for women, men, and children. Their mission, which can be found on the Beautycounter website, is to get safer products into the hands of everyone.
What did I try?
I used the No. 1 Brightening Facial Mist and the Nourishing Rosewater Mist for about two weeks.
What were my initial thoughts?
Let me start by saying, I’m by no means a skincare expert! Everyone is different, but I know what works for me.
No 1. Brightening Mist: I used this mist before I applied makeup in the morning. My makeup seemed to go on smoother and last longer throughout the day while I was using this product. I did think my face had a brighter glow during the time as well. That’s definitely a plus since I’m in need of some sunshine in my life! One of my favorite things about this mist is that it is rich in Vitamin C that helps boost the skin’s luminosity and refine the skin’s surface. Another main ingredient is Lime Peal Extract that helps to promote a brighter complexion.
Nourishing Rosewater Mist: I used this mist to set my makeup and also when my skin needed a little refresher throughout the day. I loved the smell of this – light, delicate, and not too overwhelming. I thought my skin felt softer while using the Rosewater Mist, which was amazing since the winter weather had dried out my skin. I think this would be a great product for anyone who needs a little skin pick-me-up throughout the day.
Overall, I think these two Beautycounter products did help my skin. I will definitely need to purchase a few more items to see the full benefit over a longer period of time. I always have questions when trying new things, and I’m sure some of you do too. For help, I asked Megan, my consultant and friend, a few more questions about Beautycounter. Q&A with Megan Jones, Beautycounter Consultant:
How is Beautycounter different from other skincare lines?
What makes the safety standard of Beautycounter different from other brands?
Step 1: We ban intentionally. We have created a “never list” of 1,500 questionable or harmful ingredients. This list includes the 1,400 chemicals banned or restricted in the European Union, chemicals prohibited by Health Canada as well as chemicals screened by Beautycounter.Step 2: We screen rigorously. Every potential ingredient is screened. We look for information on specific hazards, like cancer, developmental toxicity, and hormone disruptions. We use many sources: industry, academia, government bodies and non-profit health groups. We consult with scientists and industry leaders working to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals and develop safer chemicals.Step 3: We learn constantly. There are major data gaps on many cosmetic ingredients. Companies are allowed to use harmful ingredients and make their own judgments about safety. We do not assume that the absence of data means that a product is safe. It means that we do not know the potential health impacts. So we review emerging data regularly and will commission our own studies when we are unable to turn up enough information.Step 4: We source responsibly. We strive to choose the best available ingredient options. Over 80% of the ingredients that we use in our products are organic, natural, or plant-derived. The others are synthetic–we are not marketing ourselves as “natural”–but that doesn’t mean that they are unsafe. We aim to source ingredients from sustainable, non-GMO suppliers and believe in supporting the U.S. economy when possible. We do not test our products or ingredients on animals nor do we ask others to do so.Step 5: We share transparently. Information is the most important factor in any product purchase decision. We go beyond what is required by law: Our product labels identify every formula ingredient, including known components of fragrances, flavors, and intentionally added preservatives.

Overall Thoughts
Beautycounter stands for safer, effective, high quality products that actually work. Pricing is pretty relative to other skincare lines that I have used in the past. I am definitely still curious about Beautycounter, but liked the product and will continue to try out new items.
