If you’ve been following along with me for a while, you might know that Kristy Woodson Harvey is one of my favorite authors.
I had the chance to read an early copy of Kristy’s newest novel, The Wedding Veil. This is Kristy’s first historical fiction novel and I will admit I wasn’t sure what to expect because I have read very few in this genre. Well, I absolutely loved it!
The Wedding Veil is a dual timeline novel that follows the story of Cornelia and Edith Vanderbilt in the early 20th century, as well as Julia and her grandmother, Babs, in present day. We learn about each family’s history and how one family heirloom that spans the generations can have such meaning and connection.
It is hard for me to choose which family’s story is my favorite. I absolutely loved reading about the Vanderbilt family and the history of the Biltmore. I’ve only visited Biltmore once and this novel has me itching to go again! I also loved the connection that Julia and Babs have as granddaughter and grandmother – it reminded me a lot of my relationship with both of my grandmothers!
I was thrilled to be able to attend Kristy’s launch party for The Wedding Veil and really enjoyed listening to her speak about the how her own family’s wedding veil inspired her to write this novel. When Kristy mentioned this idea to her agent, her agent said it was a great idea but why not write about a real historical wedding veil?! Little did Kristy know at the time that the Vanderbilt family actually had a family heirloom wedding veil . Kristy went on to say how the story really found her, so she knew she had to write it.
On another note, Kristy is THE sweetest person! We have been “insta” friends for years, but have never met in person until her launch party. She ran up and gave me a big hug when I got there. It was wonderful to finally meet and chat in person!
I don’t want to give anything away, so you’ll have to read to find out how Kristy perfectly ties the two families together, but I know you’ll love it as much as I did.
