I can’t believe spring is finally here! Does anyone else feel like winter lasted forever?
In honor of the first day of spring, I wanted to share my first home makeover post with y’all, featuring our porch!
The porch was the first “room” that I fell in love with when we saw the house, so it was the first thing I wanted to tackle before we moved in. Let me tell you, I’m so glad we did!
Let me show you where we were before…
Nothing special to see in the before photo. The ceiling was a basic white and the floor was an odd brown/orange color.
Living in the south, I knew I wanted to add some color! Keeping with true Southern tradition, we chose to paint the ceiling a shade of Haint Blue, a blue/green color. Legend has it that “haints,” or spirits of the dead, would confuse the blue porch ceiling with the sky and pass on through, not disturbing anyone in the home. Haints or not, it’s also been said that the blue ceiling will help keep insects away. I think I’ll let the screens do the work there 😉
Choosing the right shade of blue…
There are SO many different shades of blue. As someone who works in the fashion industry, no two colors look alike to me. This can make it difficult when trying to pick that perfect shade!
We wanted to test out the color before we jumped right in, so we bought a sample container and a piece of poster board. This is such a great way to test paint if you don’t want to paint swatches all over your walls, or in this case the ceiling.
We chose to paint the ceiling Sherwin Williams Atmospheric. It was the first color we picked out!
We were so anxious to finish that we painted well into the night. We did paint a second coat the next day to make sure the ceiling was fully covered. Painting a ceiling definitely gives you a shoulder workout!
And now the floor…
Time to say “See ya, bye!” to that ugly orange floor! For the floor color, we chose to paint a softer grey that was enough contrast to the ceiling color. The grey we chose was Sherwin Williams Online.
We chose a neutral cushion color for our furniture so that we can easily switch out colors of the pillows and accessories. We also chose CushionGuard fabric, one step up from the basic outdoor fabric, so that the cushions are easier to clean. I love how all of the different shades of blue come together in our accessories!
